This blog highlights resources and resourcing. Posts are about media, web sites and other bits that the Centre comes across and thinks others may find of interest especially those involved in Catholic education in Australia.
CentreGleanings is a library of links related to education, libraries, religion, theology...
Came across this resource from Narelle Adams, an 'edutainer' and teacher-librarian. The powerpoint resource offers a history of celebrating Mother's Day to suit middle primary to lower secondary grades.

There is so much available on the net that is ready-made and easy to access that individuals or groups can use during Holy Week in preparation for Easter. Two well done sets of offerings are:
Seven Last Sayings – Animations CLICK HERE [rejesus.co.uk] Seven short animations for individual or group reflection during the weeks of Lent can be used with Secondary classes, school Staff meetings and by any adult small groups. Since each is under 5 minutes, could be used for days of Holy Week instead of weekly during Lent. The Rejeus site is easy to navigate and easy to find further material for the Lent and Easter seasons. One visit to this site will bring you back for more. Lenten retreat - Living Fully in the Friendship of God CLICK HERE [Loyola Press ] On the theme ‘Living Fully in the Friendship of God’ are six (6) video clips that may be used altogether as each is less than three (3) minutes long, use weekly or daily during Holy Week in the lead-up to the Easter. By Vinita Hampton Wright. Secondary to Adult. For other free resources for Holy Week from Loyola Press site CLICK HERE Australia's Religious Communities CD-ROM from Christian Research Association ( CRA ) - on sale now13/12/2013 A valuable resource for Studies of Religion and secondary students 'on sale' right now from CRA until 31 December 2013 is 'Australia's Religious Communities CD-ROM'. An Australian resource with fully reliable statistics and information about religions and faiths, schools that buy do need to consider 'site licence' information if you want to load it to an intranet or more than one computer. Notice from the CRA web site is : "It runs in a web-browser and functions on PCs, Mac and Linux computers. Site licences are available from the CRA for schools, libraries and wherever multiple copies are needed."

The Diocese of Bathurst draft religious education program relies on many of these from YouTube clips to authoritative articles of Church teaching. These can emanate from a particular organisation such as Caritas, an education authority such as the very professionally produced RESource, an initiative of the Catholic Education Office, Melbourne, to personal blogs and publishers.
Many of the resources available from publishers' sites have specific relevance to their own published or produced resources naturally. Garratt Publishing commenced this year with a specific Religious Education outreach initiative called REmail and its second issue dealing with Mary, the Blessed Virgin is available offering ideas and activities for both Primary and Secondary grades. It's first issue dealt with Social Justice. It could be expected there is a greater chance of usefulness from the Garratt offerings because it is an Australian publisher and distributor. Resources that may be referred to have a better chance of already being within an Australian Catholic school's collection. You can opt to subscribe to REmail which means that you'll get a heads up in your in-box when a new issue is available. St Mary's Press (Winona, Minnesota) has an online resource center with multimedia offerings and worksheets, many are freely accessible for all to use while for others a log in is required. As it is a major Catholic publisher, the range of free resources is good. Click on the following links for free religious education resources. It is also the day Archbishop Oscar Romero was born in 1917. His life and choice to stand against oppression ended in his assassination on 24 March 1980. A very good source of information is the well organised and vibrant site of the UK based Archbishop Romero Trust where copies of Romero's homilies can be sourced, view pictures in the gallery and just a few months ago (May 2013)the digitised recordings of an audio diary were made available along with printed transcripts in both Spanish and English via the site. Romero's continued inspiration to others to work for peace and justice is evident in a public Facebook page, Monsenor Oscar Arnulfo Romero. The trust also has a page. How important Romero is as a symbol of truth is the fact that in 2010 the United Nations set 24 March aside as the International Day for the Right to the Truth concerning Gross Human Rights Violations and for the Dignity of Victims The powerful feature film 'Romero' is moving and unsettling to this day. The DVD of this film is available for loan to schools and other bona fide patrons of the Catholic Resource Centre, Bathurst, NSW (Australia). The Centre can provide supplier/distributor information to others in Australia or check via TROVE for possible libraries near you that may hold it. A brief biography on the United Nations site notes that Romero's father apprenticed Romero to a carpenter when he was 13. His young life then is easy to relate to Jesus, the son of a carpenter. The excellent book, 'Romero, a life' by James R Brockman, is held in the Centre's lending collection. Lectio Divina prayer resources abound. Free and online does not always equal reliable or quality, but those accessible from Canberra-Goulburn (NSW Australia) site are worthy of noting and bookmarking for use with Catholic school staff or secondary students http://www.cg.catholic.org.au/faith_education/default.cfm?loadref=384 |
